Whereas a lot of basic weightlifting excercises fall within functional training, it’s crucial to move your body in more than one particular plane, which is what happens when you do bilateral weightlifting.
When we prioritize body looks through strength training solely, we are neglecting our DNA’s purpose and what our physiology is evolved to be – active living beings capable of engaging in physical challenges presented by daily life situations which can be solved by our motor skills. In our natural condition as humans, those challenges are more related with problem solving scenarios, like hunting/gathering or just playful acts for social interaction. In our modern society framework these could be translated into daily activities such as picking up your daughter, chasing your dog in the park, moving items at work, or competing in a social or professional sportive environment.
As a bonus to growing yourself and being capable of enjoying some of these situations, other advocates of the body, mind and soul connection may find these qualities more attractive and admiring than a good looking body incapable of gracefully and efficiently flowing through the tasks of life.
Probably the most interesting part on this training approach is that once you have understood and developed the inherent mobility necessities of your body, the enchanting looks become a silent consequence, a secondary product.
